26.04.07 - America - Greyhound Bus Trip, Jacksonville Florida

Lindsays Hot Tub !!!!!!
Lindsays Pool !!!

Hiya Everyone
Well where do I begin here, talk about an American Experience to ride the Greyhound I tell you somat mine was one I aint gonna forget!!!! Was to set off from Winston Salem 1.20pm due to arrive in Jacksonville, Florida 12.10pm 10 n half hours with four rest stops, great easy got my MP3 player, book and can take in the scenery as I go along and people watch too!!!! Bus arrived on time got on and seat sorted waved bye to Yvonne. There were a few characters on the bus, I was in the minority being white but there was a girl sat near who asked if I was English she recognised the accent, said 'Dont meet many English be great to chat'. Set off and bus was silent I thought ee are we not allowed to talk so just sat back and chilled, got to Charlotte for rest stop had to get off bus, for it to be refuled and change of driver, I chatted to Manchester girl, she was waiting for friend to pick her up. She was working in Virgina on one of the camps, she had done Camp America and decided to come back after finished Uni and still here and enjoying life, we shared what we missed back in England, crips and chocolate top items cos just not the same out here!!! Grabbed some food and headed back for bus.
Due to leave at 3.40pm, new driver lady who took ages to get sorted, by the time we left was 4.20pm she said this was only her second time doing this trip!!!! I thought aw she joking, how wrong I was, she then proceeded along but got lost and had to ring for directions into Columbia about hour half late and had a 5 min rest stop back on bus and she then told us she had to do detour to Orange and was following the bus infront cos didnt know how to get there!!!! As you can imagine us on the bus were like oh no are we gonna get to where we need to be on time, some had to catch connections at Jacksonville and knew they were gonna miss which meant night spent in the bus station itself!!! So pleased I wasnt going to have to do that, tried ringin Lindsay to let her know but couldnt get hold of Lindsay, thought I could be joining them!!!
Next stop was RS Walterborough, again directions had to be sort but eventually we got there and thought great 15 min rest stop but werent allowed off the bus, few people started to talk and get bit aggitated and one lady really upset about this and had a bit of a go at the driver!!! (Im sat thinking this could only happen in America to me, a bus driver who has no sense of directions!!!)
By this time its dark and we are about hour and half still behind schedule and off we go for Savannah, see sign 42 miles to go, great we gonna make up bit of time, then heard driver talking saying oh yeah need to drop off at Beaumount (SC) but wed passed that sign about 20 mins ago, so we had to come off the highway turn back round and head opposite direction. Well by now you can imagine some of the passengers really annoyed!!!! I just sat thinking sh** sh** Lindsay gonna be waiting and I cant get hold of her to let her know 2 hours later gonna be till can get to call box!!!!! My mobile sods law was low battery!!!!! One guy who I had chatted to came and sat next to me and said somat about being mature about the whole thing as others kicking off, I just said 'what can I do nothing its just one of those things but sure as hell will fly next time!!!'
Beaumount found eventually and dropped off young guy who was left standing in this desolate bus stop !!!! I thought thank goodness not me!!! Passengers still kicking off twisting and comments flying to driver, one lady infront of me was on the phone to Greyhound in Savannah and kept passing the phone to driver saying they wanna talk to you and she said I dont wanna talk to them Im talking to someone else for directions!!!. After bit bus driver sort of stopped bus and shouted at us all, 'Look if you dont stop making comments you can wait and ride the next bus just let me know and I'll drop you all off here!!!' I was like sh** this lady is stressed and means business!!!!! (Two nails lost during this time chewing!!!) Everyone sorta shut up a bit but still chuntered under breaths!!
Finally in Savannah by 11.10pm only nearly two hours late!!!! We all trundled off the bus and one lady asked bus driver for her name and gonna ring Greyhound. Bus driver said no problems will give her it, then the guy who gets luggage off came along and told us all who got off to get back on now, so we did, then they boarded and asked the lady who had asked for her name to get off bus, she was like 'No way'. Next thing we know police come on and ask the lady to get off and this woman from Greyhound Desk - outside chatting, time ticking on now 11.45pm!!! Lady gets back on and Greyhound Desk lady gets on and says to us all "Hear me now, you all gotta look after this bus driver and help her with directions to Jacksonville and get along as friends, you hear me!!!' I was like I dont believe this I just dont, other passengers who just got on at Savannah were like what the hell been goin on on this bus!!!!
Finally at 12.05pm we set off for Jacksonville, passengers chilled out now and sleeping mostly finally got to Jacksonville at 2.10am!!! I just thought, right all I need now is my luggage not to be there cos they open the sides of coach at each stop and thought my luck someone will have nicked it but hope they get a bad back from weight if they have ha ha!! Luckily it was there and set off to find Lins and Duc - how happy I was to see them waiting for me, Lins gave me big hug and was like what happened to you guys, when telling they were like, no no way!!!
Woke this morning and thought eee was that a nightmare or for real my trip but hey dont think I will be doing the bus even though cheap, flying is my way forwarded from now on!!!
Moral of the story is dont do the Greyhound unless you wanna have somat to remember!!!

Gonna go and chill round pool now, Lins and Duc at work but we off to Orlando on Sunday only 2half hours away and Duc driving so should be there quicker!!! Take care and catch up soon, thaks for comments from Lorraine, Sarah and Steve (Fireman) luv and hugs xxxxx

Kaye,
Just a quickie to say thhanks for the Greyhound Bus advice, all sounds like a bit of a truama, I'd have been waiting for someone to get so pissed at the driver that they'd pull a gun out and take the driver hostage, forcing them to drive them to their door or something equally bonkers. Glad to hear that you're well, glad to hear you're having a good time

All the best
